HERB BUNDLES

~ IN ALL BOXES~

This week, your herb bundles come from Umthunzi Farming Community – a social organisation operating within the Cape Town food system. Our herb bundles were born from the need for these farmers to sell their produce and herbs by providing them with a route to market – your bundle is a mix of herbs that the farmers have available, and the selection is made with seasonality in mind. To keep your herbs fresher for longer, simply untie your bundle and rinse your fresh herbs with clean water – basically: a herb bath. Then, dry them off carefully in a towel or spinner before storing – this will prevent any early rotting from excess moisture. For any soft herbs (like coriander, dill, parsley and basil), cut the stems and place in a jar with a small amount of water. For your harder-stemmed herbs (like oregano, rosemary, thyme and sage), store your bundle in an airtight container in your fridge.

PEARS

~ IN ALL BOXES~

In your boxes this week (again), we have the delicious forelle pears that come from Terra Madre farm – based in the beautiful Elgin Valley. Terra Madre is a family-owned business that grows and sources sustainable fruits and vegetables. The beautifully crisp Forelle Pear is characterised by its pretty pale, pink-dotted skin and roundish shape With a delicious crisp texture and refreshing, sweet taste – your pears can be eaten right now, or after softening. Once ripened, the fine texture of the flesh can really be appreciated, and the extra sweetness makes the experience all the more enjoyable.

LETTUCE

~ IN ALL BOXES ~

The little Gem lettuces in your box this week also hail from Terra Madre – ideal for serving as wedges or halves . To keep your lettuce fresher for longer, use a similar technique to what you do with your herbs. Make sure you rinse your baby gems real good, and pat them dry with a towel. Then, place in a sealable bag or container that has a few holes in it to aid with airflow. If your lettuce comes with a root still attached to it, pop it into a container with a little water for the root to dangle in – this will help keep it fresh and crisp for longer.

TURNIPS & CARROTS

~ IN ALL BOXES~

This week your turnips are from Naturally Organics and your carrots are from Umthunzi. To keep your root vegetables crisp and crunchy for longer, make sure you snip off their leafy tails, wash the body of your veggies, and store them in a paper bag in the fridge.

PECANS

~ IN ALL BOXES ~

Positioned on the banks of Orange River, you’ll find the Roux Pecan Farm. Here, the most delicious, certified organic, 100% raw pecan nuts are grown. To maximize the shelf life of your shelled pecans, store them in a cool, dry area. After opening your package, place the pecans in a sealed airtight container, or place the original package in a resealable, heavy-duty freezer bag.

GRANOLA

~ IN ALL BOXES~

Seed & Circus is a fresh face in the food industry, serving up ethically sourced products from small-scale local suppliers. The Seed & Circus granola in your box this week is made with no shortcuts and no unwanted additives. Their granola is gluten-free, natural and sweetened with nothing but a little honey. The honey is sourced straight from the beekeeper, their olive oil is organic, and both ingredients are hyper-local – they’ve also chosen to use mineral rich Oryx desert salt.

MILK

~ IN YOUR MEDIUM, LARGE & VEGETARIAN BOXES ~

Your fresh milk comes from the pristine Langvallei family farm in the mountains surrounding Roberston. Their cows enjoy fresh green pastures munching on good grass, just as cows should. Your milk is preservative-free and should last up to a week in the fridge, but can also be frozen for up to 3 months.

OAT MILK

~ IN YOUR PLANT BASED & LARGE BOXES ~

Your dairy alternative this week is Oat Milk. Produced by SOMA, Oatify is fresh oat milk produced right here in the Mother City. Oat milk is a highly sustainable replacement for cow’s milk. Plus, it tastes absolutely delicious (use liberally). Please note that because Oatify is a fresh preservative-free product, it requires refrigeration and should be consumed soon after opening – but we don’t reckon you’ll have any trouble with that.

Because we believe that you should know the food you eat on a more personal level.

CAMEMBERT & CHEESE

~ IN YOUR LARGE, MEDIUM & VEGETARIAN BOXES ~

The delicious cheese in your box this week is from Dalewood Fromage – an artisanal farmstead cheesery situated in the Cape Winelands.Dalewood only uses milk produced by its own Jersey cows – it’s an authentic estate cheese and has provenance. For optimum storage, simply remove any plastic wrapping (and pop this into your recycling) and wrap it in wax paper, foil or (first prize) a beeswax wrap that can be used over and over again. Plastic prevents it from breathing and builds up too much moisture, which alters the protective rind that preserves the cheese and ultimately affects the flavour. Place your wrapped cheese in an airtight container, to make sure it gets the right amount of moisture – this stops strong cheeses from emitting any odors and flavouring other contents in the fridge. Remember to take out your cheese at least two hours before being served – to be enjoyed at room temperature, in order to enhance the flavour profile. Camembert and Brie are great served with fresh fruit and/or a preserve. Baked camembert is fabulous with sun-dried tomatoes and thyme, garlic and rosemary.

EGGS

~ IN YOUR LARGE, MEDIUM & VEGETARIAN BOXES ~

Your eggs are laid by pasture-raised chickens that feed on non-GMO seeds. What that means is that these birds are free to roam with no fences locking them in. They have a warm protected coop to shelter in at night and lay eggs in during the day. By following the cows around the ranch, these chickens fulfil a niche role, while scratching and searching for grubs and seeds in the lush pastures of Spier Wine Estate.

LAMB SHOULDER STEW CUT FROM HERDSMEN

~ IN YOUR LARGE & MEDIUM BOXES ~

Herdsmen Ethical Meat Of Origin is a family-run farm in Klein Rooiberg that strives for the ethical treatment and full traceability of their meat products. This week you will find some Lamb Shoulder Stew Cut. You can pop this into the freezer if you don’t want to use it within a few days – but the sooner you use it, the better. We will have a mouth watering Lamb Shoulder Shepherd's Pie recipe on our blog under ‘Recipe Inspiration’ to give you some inspo on how to best cook this cut, but it will also be very well suited to stew-type recipes with lengthy cooking times.

HAKE FROM GREENFISH

~ IN YOUR LARGE & MEDIUM BOXES ~

Green Fish Traders is a small family-run business that draws on its knowledge of fishing and weather patterns, as well as fish availability. Plus, all fish they catch are green-listed on the SASSI list.

Your hake will come defrosted so it’s not a good idea to freeze again – rather use within two days of receiving your box. When you are ready to cook, rinse it under the tap and pat dry with a tea towel. Then, pan-fry it until golden in a lemon and garlic butter, or make a Winter warming fish pie - both suggestions found on our blog under ‘Recipe Inspiration.’ But most of all, enjoy the taste of the sea.
