Where it’s from, a bit about it, perhaps a fun fact and how to store or keep fresh

Naturally Organic’s Leeks

~ ALL BOXES~

The leeks in your market box this week come from Naturally Organic! Methods of cleaning out your leeks will depend on whether you’ll be chopping or cooking them whole. Before getting started with either method, rinse your leeks under water to remove dirt or sand. For chopped leeks – after rinsing, add chopped pieces into a colander and rinse under cold water. Transfer leeks from colander to a bowl of cold water and use your hands to agitate the leeks and dislodge any dirt. For whole leeks – fan open the leek and place under cold running water to rinse out any dirt or sand. Leeks can exude an aroma that can be absorbed by other foods in your fridge – to prevent this, don’t trim or wash leeks before storing. Lightly wrap them in plastic wrap and store in the vegetable drawer of your fridge.

Bergsoom’s Minneolas

~ ALL BOXES~

This week, Bergsoom has provided us with minneolas! These easy–to–peel sweet fruits are a cross between a tangerine and a grapefruit. Minneolas should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated area. They can stay at room temperature for one week. If refrigerated, they can be kept for up to two weeks. Bergsoom is a family farm which started in 1946 – over the years, the farm expanded with new orchards and new varieties being planted – like the delicious hybrid minneolas in your box.

Magic Herbs’ Guavas

~ ALL BOXES~

The tropical guavas in your Market Box are from Magic Herbs! Guavas are a rich source of vitamins A, B, and C and make a great dessert when served with sugar and cream. If your guavas have not ripened to your liking, place them in a zipper bag and store them at room temperature (out of direct sunlight) to allow them to ripen within a day or two. To store: cut guava pieces, place pieces into a container, then refrigerate.

The Jerusalem Artichoke from Naturally

~ ALL BOXES~

Despite its name, The Jerusalem Artichoke is not related to the artichoke at all. This lumpy, brown-skinned tuber is a veggie related to the sunflower – with a white, nutty, sweet, crunchy interior. Considered a superfood, Jerusalem artichokes are rich in iron, potassium, magnesium, calcium, carbohydrates, and vitamins C & E. This superfood makes a great alternative to potatoes and can be baked, boiled, used in soups and stews, or thinly sliced and tossed into salads.

Spinach King’s Spinach Bread

~ ALL BOXES ~

A Market Box favourite! This week’s tasty spinach loaf comes from the ovens of local spinach innovator, Spinach King. Owner, Lufefe, explains that Spinach King was created to promote the consumption of spinach. Lufefe and his team have done this by producing innovative spinach products to combat health challenges, such as obesity and diabetes, in his local community. The spinach bread in your box is baked using spinach sourced from local microfarms, tapioca and rice flour. So you can be assured that this tasty add is 100% gluten-free!

Wild Sesame Salt from Wild Harvest

~ ALL BOXES ~

Situated in the Cape Floristic regions, Wild Harvest offers a range of food products made using wild indigenous plants that naturally grow in the region. The wild sesame in your market box is enriched with the same aromas of this part of the Cape Floristic region. Its light and nutty saltiness will bring flavour and a soft crunch to Asian dishes – and also to grains, vegetables and salads.

Cream of the Crop’s Plant Buttah

~ PLANT BOXES ~

The creamy block of plant buttah in your Market Box this week comes from Cream of the Crop. This plan- based buttery spread is an alternative to dairy butter and is great as a spread, for frying and baking too.

Soma Oatmilk - Oatify

~ PLANT BOXES ~

The plant-based beverage, Oatify Milk, in your Market Box this week comes from Soma. Soma’s oat milk is produced right here in the Mother City, and is a highly sustainable replacement for cow’s milk. It’s preservative-free, which is why it requires refrigeration and should be consumed soon after opening.

Tofu from Tofu Tub

~ PLANT AND VEG BOXES ~

We have 100% organic tofu from Tofu Tub in your box this week. Tofu is extremely rich in protein, and is made from the curds of soybean milk – also known as “The Cheese of the Orient”. Your tofu comes in vacuum-sealed packaging, so if you’re not going to use it as soon as it arrives, we recommend that you store it in the fridge and consume within 3-5 days of opening. After you’ve opened the tofu, you can transfer any leftovers to an airtight container and fill it with fresh water.

Real Food Factory ‘s Organic Lentils

~ PLANT AND VEG BOXES ~

Brown lentils are one of the most popular forms of protein around the world. The lovely lentils in your Market Box are locally grown, flavoursome, and when dried, keep for up to a year. These lentils come from Real Food Factory – a local company with 100% vegetarian–friendly factories. When cooking your lentils, make sure you empty them into a colander, rinse, and pick through them for any small stones or “dead” seeds that might have gotten into the mix. Soaking them also helps quicken their cooking time and reduces their antinutrient content. You can also easily sprout lentils in a jar, which increases the amount of vitamins and minerals – especially B vitamins and carotene. Lentils are also super low in calories, rich in iron and folate and an excellent source of protein.

Cooked’s Butternut Hummus

~ LARGE, MEDIUM AND PLANT BOXES ~

The savoury dip in your Market Box hails from the foodies with Middle Eastern and Mediterranean roots – Cooked. This hummus is made from butternut, chickpeas, tahini, cinnamon, lemon, and garlic and the chefs at Cooked recommend it as an accompaniment to roast veggies, chicken, leg of lamb – or just simply as a dip with fresh khoubiz or pita bread. Did you know: the word hummus means “chickpea” in Arabic and has its origins in Turkish, Lebanese, Syrian, and Egyptian cuisine. After every use, store hummus in your fridge, in a tightly sealed container. For a long-term option, hummus also freezes very well.

Harissa Paste from Making KOS

~  VEG BOXES ~

Over the past 10 years, Loubie Rusch of Making KOS, has been engaging people in knowing, growing and using local wild foods. The rich diversity of indigenous food plants that are so well adapted to the Cape's unique conditions have nearly been forgotten – but we are gradually beginning to see the region's well-adapted local ingredients become recognised and integrated into our local food system – notably through your Market Box. The harissa paste in your box is a spicy North African condiment that includes sesame seeds, peanuts, garlic, red chillies, cumin and coriander.

Cream of the Crop’s Butter

~ VEG, LARGE AND MEDIUM BOX ~

Cream of the Crop’s hand-churned butters are made with cream from Robertsons, lactic cultures from grass-fed Jersey Cows, and added salts from the West Coast sea. Owner, Maria, sources the ingredients for all of her products locally. To make the butter in your Market Box, the fermented cream is churned by hand, until the butter separates from the buttermilk. The butter is then kneaded inside the buttermilk, salted and each unit is shaped by hand.

Rosemary Lamb Sausages from Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants

~ LARGE AND MEDIUM BOX ~

Packed with goodness, the lamb sausages in your Market Box are from Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants. These sausages are made with rosemary, lamb and red wine – to give you the taste of a rosemary-roasted lamb in the form of a sausage. Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants’ motto is “We find the right farmer. We buy the whole animal. We take it apart with respect. We use every piece we can.” So, you can rest assured knowing that your sausages come from the type of farm that rears healthy, happy animals.

Greenfish’s Swordfish

~ LARGE AND MEDIUM BOX ~

Greenfish’s swordfish steaks are an easy-to-cook game fish that pairs well with most flavours. The white flesh can be seasoned with butter, salt and pepper – don’t forget the lemon juice when you pan-fry these babies to golden perfection within minutes. Greenfish is all about sustainable fishing – this small, family–run fishery draws on its knowledge of fishing, weather patterns, and fish availability to ensure their fishing methods are sustainable and environmentally friendly. Plus, all fish they catch are green-listed on the SASSI list.

Son of a Butcher’s Whole Chicken

~ LARGE AND MEDIUM BOX ~

The chicken in your Market Box comes from Son of a Butcher’s (SOB). SOB produce is pasture-raised and free of hormones. Here are some handy pre-cooking tips to follow to ensure you get the most from your chicken. Once removed from its packaging, discard any residue liquids – then, rinse your chicken and set it aside to air for 20 minutes. This process helps remove the cold edge, bringing it closer to room temperature – ensuring a smoother cooking process and tastier results. Don’t be alarmed if you pick up on a slightly egg-like, sulphuric smell. When vacuum sealing the chicken, oxygen is removed from the packaging to preserve its quality.
