BEETROOT & BEAN BURGER PATTIES

~ PLANT & VEGETARIAN BOX ~

We’re thrilled to have Naked Leaf’s fabulous ethically-sourced, plant-based burger patties in the box this week. They are free of soy milk and eggs, making them 100% plant based and 100% delicious. Your burgers will arrive defrosted – as soon as you can, pop them into the freezer. When you are ready to chow down, you can cook them straight from frozen – whether that be fried, braaied or oven-baked.

MUSHROOMS

~ IN ALL BOXES~

Your delicious brown mushrooms come from Funki Fungi. Passionately grown locally and with good farming practices – you’re sure to love every bite. Place your fresh shrooms in paper bags or wrap them in a cloth for storage in the refrigerator. Plastic wrapping can trap in moisture and cause the mushrooms to sweat and go mushy.

CARROTS

~ IN ALL BOXES ~

This week, your carrots are from Naturally Organics. Carrots are one of the most sugary vegetables in the world – only the best beets carrots in sugars (pun intended). Carrots harvested over winter can result in sweeter, tastier roots – this is because the carrot’s sugars are more concentrated in the cold ground. To keep your root vegetables crisp and crunchy for longer, make sure you snip off their leafy tails, wash the body of your veggies, and store them (preferably) in the veg crisper drawer of your fridge, or in a sealed container or perforated bag in the fridge.

ROMANESCO

~ IN SOME BOXES

Making a special appearance this week is nature’s finest display of sacred geometry – the Romanesco, supplied fresh by Simply Fresh. Not only is this delectable vegetable a tasty treat – she’s easily the prettiest veg out there with her flashy chartreuse nodes and perfectly twirled Fibonacci swirls. The Romanesco recipes are endless and our fabulous food team have tapped into some lovely ones for you. You can blanch, grill, blend, pickle or just nibble it raw. To store your Romanesco, treat it like your broccoli – store it (unwashed) in a mesh bag or an open container in the crisper drawer, and rinse just before using. It can last for a week in the fridge but it’s always best to eat sooner rather than later (you'll probably be so excited to cook it that you won't want to wait, anyway).

CHICKEN BREASTS

~ IN YOUR LARGE & MEDIUM BOXES ~

Fensham’s is a small, family-owned farm in the Langeberg Mountains.Thier approach to farming is to nurture and regenerate the land, allowing the natural ecosystems in the soil to flourish – and to humanely produce food that is healthy and nutritious.

Their pasture raised chickens live in chicken houses, which are open to fresh air and sunshine and sit directly on fresh pasture. The houses are moved to fresh pasture every day and the number of chickens per house is kept low, giving them space to move around, without stress from overcrowding. Their chickens eat all the grass, legumes, bugs and worms they want – before being interested in the feed provided. This feed is non-GMO and free of all medication (hormones, antibiotics and antimicrobials) – allowing their chickens to grow at a slower and more natural rate, producing the most tender and delicious meat.

Your chicken breasts will come in a vacuum sealed package that ensures the meat is fresh and has a longer shelf life. You can keep the sealed package for up to 2 days in the fridge before consuming. Otherwise, place it in the freezer and consume within 6 months of the process date on the label.

BEEF MINCE

~ IN YOUR LARGE & MEDIUM BOXES~

Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants are supplying their unadulterated beef mince to make some of the most scrumptious and juicy burger patties around. FFMM’s motto is “We find the right farmer. We buy the whole animal. We take it apart with respect. We use every piece we can.” You can rest assured knowing that your beef came from the type of farm that rears healthy, happy animals. Your beef will come fresh – it’s best to dig in as soon as possible, otherwise freeze your meat if you’re not going to cook it within 2 days of receiving your box. It’s best stored and frozen in a covered, airtight container.

MILK

~ IN YOUR MEDIUM, LARGE & VEGETARIAN BOXES ~

Your fresh milk comes from the pristine Langvallei family farm in the mountains surrounding Roberston. Their cows enjoy fresh green pastures munching on good grass, just as cows should. Your milk is preservative-free and should last up to a week in the fridge, but can also be frozen for up to 3 months.

OAT MILK

~ IN YOUR PLANT BASED & LARGE BOXES ~

Your dairy alternative this week is Oat Milk. Produced by SOMA, Oatify is fresh oat milk produced right here in the Mother City. Oat milk is a highly sustainable replacement for cow’s milk. Plus, it tastes absolutely delicious (use liberally). Please note that because Oatify is a fresh preservative-free product, it requires refrigeration and should be consumed soon after opening – but we don’t reckon you’ll have any trouble with that.

BUTTERMILK

~ IN YOUR MEDIUM & LARGE BOXES ~

Your buttermilk is super special as it is handmade by Maria van Zyl from Cream of the Crop. Buttermilk is the by-product of the butter-making process – all the tasty butter you’ve been devouring left behind some tasty fermented milk. Maria says that “true cultured buttermilk is directly connected to the butter making process and is much more nutritious. As the cultures I use are natural, this adds beneficial probiotics, microorganisms and bacteria to your diet.” If you are lucky you might even get a piece of butter in your buttermilk – jackpot! Buttermilk made from sweet cream has a wonderful milky, clean flavour. We have the tastiest recipe suggestion for how to use your buttermilk in a crispy buttermilk fried chicken burger (drool). However, there are a host of wonderful ways to use and consume it – whether it be to add some creaminess to a soup, bake some bread or marinate your meats. Buttermilk is best used as fresh as possible and will keep in the fridge for 5 days.

EGGS

~ IN YOUR LARGE, MEDIUM & VEGETARIAN BOXES ~

Your eggs are laid by pasture-raised chickens that feed on non-GMO seeds. What that means is that these birds are free to roam with no fences locking them in. They have a warm protected coop to shelter in at night and lay eggs in during the day. By following the cows around the ranch, these chickens fulfil a niche role, while scratching and searching for grubs and seeds in the lush pastures of Spier Wine Estate.
