Know Your Food 12/10/2020

Where it’s from, a bit about it, perhaps a fun fact and how to store or keep fresh

Potatoes

~ ALL BOXES ~

Your tasty spuds come from Patrysvlei where Thomas Bergh grows exotic potatoes just outside of Clanwilliam. For the Bergh’s, farming is about ensuring the food on your table has been responsibly produced and that it's good for you and the planet too. Store your potatoes (unwashed) in a dark cupboard. When you want to cook, bake, fry or boil these earthy bulbs, wash them under cool water. Don’t be afraid to cook them unpeeled – they’re relatively soft and much of the nutritional value of a potato is found in its skin. If baked or fried, the skins add a rustic crunch when coated in olive oil.

Tomatoes

ALL BOXES ~

Hello tamaties! Tomatoes are a great source of Vitamin A – great for cell growth and development, fighting off diseases and even good vision.

Giant Mushrooms

~ MEDIUM, LARGE, VEGETARIAN & PlANT BASE BOXES ~

Sourced from Naturally Organics, the swiss chard in your box can be braised and enjoyed in a curried stew. The stems are firmer than the leaves, so when cooking start by chopping up and cooking the stems before the leaves. Chards keep for up to four days in the fridge.

Sweet Peppers

~ MEDIUM, LARGE, VEGETARIAN & PlANT BASE BOXES ~

These beautiful peppers are sourced from Umthunzi and are extremely nutritious. ½ a cup (about 5 strips) provides 100 percent of your daily requirement of Vitamin C! Vitamin C is needed by the body to form collagen in bones, cartilage, muscle, and blood vessels, and aids in the absorption of iron.

Rocket

~ ALL BOXES ~

The luscious leaves in your box are a great add to salads. The rocket’s peppery taste is also a flavourful add to pastas, stews and  makes a delicious topping to pizzas. Rich in Vitamin A, C and K these leafy greens are rocking with minerals and flavour.

Blueberries

~ MEDIUM, LARGE & ~

We've got delicious Terra Madre blueberries in your box! If you're using your berries in baked goods, dust them with flour just before you add them to a batter. This ensures they do not sink to the bottom of the pan. Store in a dry place or freeze them.

Avocados

~ ALL BOXES ~

Store your avocados at room temperature out of direct sunlight. Once ripe, eat right away or store in the fridge. If you’re looking to store half an avo, brush the exposed flesh with lemon juice, cover tightly with a Beeswax wrap, and refrigerate.

Pineapple

~ ALL BOXES ~

Fun fact – a great way to distribute a pineapple’s sugar content, throughout the fruit, is to stand it upside down for a few days. This allows the sugar to flow towards the top – it’s genius! Your pineapple is sourced from Naturally Organic.

Feta

~ SMALL, MEDIUM & LARGE   ~

The creamy feta cheese in your box is sourced from Camelot. Properly stored in brine or milk and refrigerated, feta cheese will last up to 3 months and is not ideal for freezing too. Enjoy

Vegan White Cheddar

~ PLANT BASED ~

Le Coquin is French for a ‘sneaky little child’, but as this sustainable supplier explains, their cheeses are free from dairy, egg, gluten, and soy – so there’s no need to sneak an extra slice. For optimum storage, simply remove any plastic wrapping and wrap it in wax paper, foil, or (first prize) a beeswax wrap that can be used again. Store in your fridge.

Prego Rolls

~ALL BOXES ~

Sourced from Knead bakery, your sourdough Prego rolls contain gluten. An important part of Portuguese eats, Prego rolls make the perfect soft buns to hold grilled meats for those mouthwatering on-the-go sandwiches.

Quinoa

~ VEGETARIAN & PLANT BASED BOXES ~

The Real Food Factory has provided the organic, locally grown quinoa in your box. High in protein, and low in calories this grain can be enjoyed as a side to stews, veggies, added to porridge or salads too for added texture.

Tofu

~ VEGETARIAN & PLANT BASED BOXES ~

The 100% organic tofu from Tofu Tub in your box is extremely rich in protein, and is made from the curds of soybean milk – also known as “The Cheese of the Orient”. Your tofu comes in vacuum-sealed packaging, so if you’re not going to use it as soon as it arrives, we recommend that you store it in the fridge and consume within 3-5 days of opening.

Hummus

~ VEGETARIAN & PLANT BASED BOXES ~

Find the oh so popular hummus in your box this week from Cooked! Hummus can double as a healthy spread or dip – think: hummus platter with fresh veggies and hand tossed whole wheat flat bread (delicious). You can help hummus stay fresh longer by storing it in your refrigerator after every use.

Beef Steak

~ MIXED MEAT & RED MEAT BOXES ~

Enjoy beef steak from LA Farms in this week’s Mixed Meat and Red Meat Box! LA Farms is a retail butchery that supplies the finest cuts of meats from their grass-fed and free-range farm.

Chicken Breast

~ WHITE MEAT & MIXED MEAT BOXES ~

The chicken breasts come from Son of a Butcher’s pasture-raised poultry. Once removed from its packaging, discard any residue liquids, then rinse your chicken and set it aside to air for 20 minutes. This process helps remove the cold edge, bringing it closer to room temperature and ensuring a smoother cooking process and tastier results.

Lamb

~ RED MEAT BOXES ~

Herdsmen’s lamb is a combination of neck, shank, leg and shoulder on the bone. This lamb cut is best browned in a pot until golden and sealed, then cooked low-and-slow in a sauce for ultimate tenderness and flavour development. Find these in your Red Meat Box.

BBQ Sauce

~ ALL BOXES ~
