ASIAN GREENS

~ IN ALL BOXES ~

Your crunchy fresh Asian greens this week come from Terra Madre in Elgin. You will either get pak choi (Chinese white cabbage) or tatsoi (Chinese flat cabbage) in your box. They are similar, but pak choi has thick, white, crisp and juicy stems and round, light green leaves. Tatsoi has darker, shinier leaves that are relatively flat like a plate – it has a stronger flavour and slightly tougher texture than pak choi. Store in a breathable bag, or container, in the crisper drawer of your fridge.

GUAVAS

~ IN ALL BOXES ~

Your delicious guavas are from Magic Herbs in Porterville. Not only are they full of flavour and fragrance, guavas are full of nutrients and all the vitamins too. Rich in Vitamin C, lycopene and antioxidants (beneficial for skin), the health benefits are numerous. To store – cover and refrigerate your ripe fruit for a day or two, or if they’re not at optimal ripeness – ripen at room temperature, out of direct sun, until yields to gentle pressure. If you find your guavas are starting to go too soft, make a simple poached syrup and store in the fridge to extend their shelf life.

EXOTIC MUSHROOMS

~ IN ALL BOXES ~

Your exotic mushrooms this week come from Funki Fungi. Passionately grown locally, and with good farming practices – you’re sure to love every bite. Place your fresh shrooms in paper bags, or wrap them in a cloth for storage in the refrigerator – plastic wrapping can trap moisture and cause the mushrooms to sweat and go mushy.

MICRO GREEN PEA SHOOTS

~ IN VEG AND PLANT BOXES~

These micro wonders come from Olief Farm and Organic Micro Greens. They taste like peas and pack a powerful nutrient punch. Pea shoots contain Vitamin C, Vitamin A and are super rich in antioxidants – which provide anti-inflammatory and phytonutrients to support the body’s immune system. They are best stored in an airtight container in the crisper drawer of the fridge.

THAI CASHEW SPRINKLE

~ ALL BOXES ~

Seed & Circus is doing it again this week with a wholesome seed sprinkle. This delicious sprinkle in your box is made with no shortcuts and no unwanted additives. It has cashews, coconut shavings, sesame seeds, lemon juice and fresh coriander (dehydrated). All ingredients are sourced carefully and ethically. Store in an airtight container in your cupboard.

GREEN THAI CURRY PASTE

~ ALL BOXES ~

The locally made Thai paste in your box is from Aioli – the brainchild of Annalize Buchanan and Oliver Swart, two chefs whose work together is a perfect complement to their skills and experience. They make all of their products to order, minimising wastage, and you’ll find that they’re always packaged in glass – never plastic. Store in the fridge and use within 3 days. If you don’t see yourself using all of it at this time pop it in the freezer. NOTE: All Plant and Veggie boxes have a plants based only ingredients.

ORGANIC LOCAL CHICKPEAS

~ IN VEG AND PLANT BOXES ~

Chickpeas are high in protein and make an excellent replacement for meat in vegetarian and vegan diets.

Your deliciously versatile chickpeas come from Real Food Factory – a local company with their ethics always at the core of their business. Their factory and facilities are 100% vegetarian-friendly, and they are long-standing supporters of fair trade and the organic movement. You need to soak your chickpeas overnight before cooking them, this begins the sprouting process which lowers the cooking time and reduces their antinutrient content. Store them in a glass jar with a lid in the cupboard.

TOFU

~  IN VEG AND PLANT BOXES ~

This week’s spinach loaf comes from the one and only Spinach King – the small-but-growing local company with a success story that will give you goosebumps. Spinach King bread is not only deliciously healthy – this bread loaf is empowering and educating people about the value of 'slow' healthy food. Lufefe, owner and founder of Spinach King, says “my dream is not to grow a big business, but rather to own something that can serve my community.” Spinach contains all six major classes of nutrients and is one of the most highly affordable vegetables in the world. The bread is made using organic spinach that is sourced from local micro farms in the metro, tapioca and rice flour making it 100% certified gluten free.

YOUNG CHEDDAR

~ VEG, MEDUM & LARGE BOX ~

We have some mild, soft, young cheddar from Mystill for you to enjoy this week. Although Mystill products are not ‘certified’ organic, all their animals are raised as naturally and as free as possible. All of their cheeses are handmade artisanally, too. For optimum storage, simply remove any plastic wrapping ( pop this into your recycling) and wrap it in wax paper, foil, or (first prize) a beeswax wrap that can be used over and over again. Keep in the fridge.

EGGS

~ VEG, MEDUM & LARGE BOX ~

Your eggs are laid by Farmer Angus’s pasture-raised chickens which feed on non-GMO seeds. What that means is that these birds are free to roam with no fences locking them in – they have a warm protected coop to shelter in at night and lay eggs in during the day. Store your eggs in their cardboard container and on the middle shelf of your fridge – this is actually the best way to keep them fresher for longer, rather than in the fridge door where the temperature fluctuates.

MUSSELS

~ MEDUM & LARGE BOX ~

We hope you’re as excited about your mussels as we are! These black beauties come debearded and cleaned for your convenience. Blue Ocean Mussels grow them in Saldanha Bay, on the West-Coast of South Africa, on suspended ropes in the ocean. They rely on this natural, self-fulfilling cycle that continues harvest after harvest – and that requires no extra feeding or anything else really, as new mussels settle naturally on the ropes. Your mussels have been frozen, as fresh mussels couldn’t be harvested due to some being affected by a red tide – all this means is that it’s not recommended to freeze again. Store in the fridge in a container so no liquid leaks.

CHICKEN BREASTS

~ MEDUM & LARGE BOX ~

Your plump and fat chicken breasts come from Son of a Butcher or Fenshams. Here are some tips for handling your chicken: before cooking your meat, remove it from the packaging and discard any liquid. Give it a rinse if necessary, and set aside on a plate to air for 20 minutes – this will take the cold edge off the meat, bringing it closer to room temperature, for a smoother cooking process and tastier result. When opening your chicken packaging, don’t be alarmed if there's a slight eggy, sulphur-like smell – this does not mean the chicken is off! When vacuum sealing the chicken, some oxygen is removed from the packaging to preserve quality – this is the reason for the smell released upon opening. Prior to cooking, simply rinse it under some cold water and set it aside to air. If there's still a potent odour after 20 minutes of airing and a sticky or slimy texture, please discard the chicken and contact us as soon as possible.
