Where it’s from, a bit about it, perhaps a fun fact and how to store or keep fresh

Organic Limes

~ ALL BOXES~

The limes in your Market Box come from Simply Fresh! Limes are high in vitamin C and antioxidants, so adding them to your diet is a great way to improve immunity and reduce heart disease risk factors.

Herb Bundles

~ ALL BOXES~

This week, your herb bundles come from Umthunzi Farming Community – a social organisation operating within the Cape Town food system. Their herb bundles were born from the need for local farmers to sell their produce and herbs and the Umthunzi Farming Community served as a route to market. Your herb bundle is a mix of herbs that have been seasonally farmed – for any soft herbs (like coriander, dill, parsley and basil), cut the stems and place in a jar with a small amount of water. For your harder stemmed herbs (like oregano, rosemary, thyme and sage), store your bundle in an airtight container in your fridge.

Bulgogi Sauce

~ ALL BOXES~

The bulgogi sauce in your box comes from Sepial's Kitchen and contains soy sauce, sesame oil, onion, garlic, ginger, fresh apple, pear, and ground black pepper. This sauce is used predominantly as a beef marinade in Korea – it’s also completely plant-based.

Choc Almonds Bliss Bites

~ PLANT BASED BOX ~

Herbivorous is a supplier of vegan comfort meals with the belief that “eating should be a pleasurable experience while being healthy, animal and environmentally friendly.” We certainly hope that you find comfort in the Herbivorous Almond Coconut Crunch Balls in your box.

Vegan Mozzarella Cheese

~ PLANT BASED BOX ~

Le Coquin is French for a sneaky little child, but as this sustainable supplier explains, their cheeses are free from dairy, egg, gluten, and soy – so there’s no need to sneak around when adding them to your meals. The mozzarella in your Market Box is a star ingredient to use on your pizzas and pastas, adding a traditional creamy texture to any modern meal.

Olives from Olief

~ PLANT BASED & VEG BOXES ~

Olief Farm is a small scale farm located in the Durbanville Hills with sustainability at the heart of its production value. Olives are naturally rich in antioxidants and in healthy monounsaturated fatty acids –enjoy the treat.

Marinated Mixed Vegetables

~ PLANT BASED & VEG BOXES ~

You’ll find some marinated mixed vegetables from Cooked in your box this week. In the mix are roasted butternut, red peppers, tomatoes, and fresh herbs in an olive oil vinaigrette – once received, keep refrigerated.

Organic Chickpeas

~ PLANT BASED & VEG BOXES ~

Chickpeas are high in protein and make an excellent replacement for meat in vegetarian and vegan diets. Your chickpeas come from Real Food Factory – a local company with good ethics always at the core of their business. Soak them overnight before cooking, this begins the sprouting process – which lowers cooking time and reduces their antinutrient content. Store them in a glass jar with a lid in the cupboard.

Mama Bongi’s

Chocolate Chip Cookies

~ VEG BOXES, MEDIUM & LARGE BOXES ~

Meet Mama Bongi’s Chocolate Chip Cookies! These home-baked treats come from a Wynberg mom’s kitchen, and are baked fresh – so they should be enjoyed as soon as you’ve received them. “I always dreamed of being a teacher and this cookie business allows me to lift up and teach others to cook with me.” – Mama Bongi.

Raclette Cheese

~ VEG BOX~

The Raclette cheese in your Market Box is from Klein River. The curd washing process ensures creaminess and a low lactose content. Raclette uses cultures that are also used in the production of blue cheeses – this artisanal, handmade, hand-brushed and hand-cut cheese has no artificial colourants and is great on pizzas or a lekker braaibroodjie.

Young Gruberg Cheese

~ LARGE & MEDIUM BOXES ~

The Gruberg cheese in your box is a Klein River flagship cheese and winner of multiple local and international awards. This artisanal, handmade, hand-brushed and hand-cut cheese undergoes a second scalding process – which gives it it’s nutty, earthy aromas and smooth-but-firm texture.

Mozzarella Cheese

~ VEG BOXES, MEDIUM & LARGE BOXES ~

Camelot’s mozzarella in your Market Box is handmade using Italian cultures and microbial rennet – with no preservatives or additives of any sort. Camelot’s slightly matured Mozzarella melts beautifully and can be sliced and served with salami and other lovely meats and breads. This cheese’s shelf life is 3 weeks, but can still but can still be used for up to 6 weeks.

Beef for Bulgogi (Ribeye, Sirloin or Rump)

~ LARGE AND MEDIUM BOX ~

We’ve included the most tender pieces of beef for your beef bulgogi this week – from Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants, whose motto is “We find the right farmer. We buy the whole animal. We take it apart with respect. We use every piece we can.”

Kingklip

~ LARGE AND MEDIUM BOX ~

The Kingklip in your Market Box comes from Greenfish. Greenfish is a Cape Town based, family-run fishery that is all about sustainable fishing. The fishery draws on its knowledge of fishing, weather patterns, and fish availability to ensure their fishing methods are sustainable and environmentally friendly. Plus, all fish they catch are green-listed on the SASSI list.

Chicken Breasts

~ LARGE AND MEDIUM BOX ~

The chicken breasts in your Market Box comes from Son of a Butcher’s (SOB). SOB produce is pasture-raised and free of hormones. Here are some handy pre-cooking tips to follow to ensure you get the most from your chicken. Once removed from its packaging, discard any residue liquids – then, rinse your chicken and set it aside to air for 20 minutes. This process helps remove the cold edge, bringing it closer to room temperature – ensuring a smoother cooking process and tastier results. Your chicken breasts will come in a vacuum sealed package that ensures the meat is fresh and has a longer shelf life. You can keep the sealed package for up to 2 days in the fridge before consuming. Otherwise, place it in the freezer and consume within 6 months of the process date on the label.
