Where it’s from, a bit about it, perhaps a fun fact and how to store or keep fresh

Cape Gooseberries

~ ALL BOXES~

Although we’ve sourced them from Cape-based food producers (Simple Fresh), that isn’t how the cape gooseberry got its name – these golden berries got their name from the husk-like cape around the fruit. Enjoy them as received or add to your baking – or blend them into juices or jams. Store your cape gooseberries (unwashed) in the fridge for 5-7 days. They can also be dried or frozen.

Mangetout / Snow Peas

~ ALL BOXES~

In French, mangetout means ‘eat it all’. These flat-podded pea varieties got their name from the fact that they are picked and eaten when the peas are young – so young that the pod is still flat, with the young peas still inside. They’re also known by the names snow pea or sugar pea (cute). The peas in your Market Box were sourced from Field Fresh – a fruit and veg supplier that specialises in a range of exotic produce sourced throughout the southern parts of Africa.

Parsnips

~ ALL BOXES~

This week, local family-run farm Naturally Organic has supplied your Market box with parsnips! These beige carrot-lookalikes are root vegetables that are (unsurprisingly) related to both carrots and parsley. These veggies can be eaten raw or added to stews, soups, baked, steamed, mashed or roasted! They’re super versatile and, much like carrots, are sweet in taste too.

Onion & Rosemary Chutney

~ ALL BOXES~

The little French jar of onion and rosemary chutney in your box comes from Léo's Little Jars – a confectionery that uses only the best seasonal and local produce to make limited edition jams. With no added preservatives or additives, Léo relies on her

grand-mère’s recipes to create unique flavours using only real fruits, flowers, teas and spirits.

Baby Gem Lettuce

~ ALL BOXES~

The baby gem lettuce in your box comes from Neighbourhood Farms, Valota and Umthunzi. This compact, crispy lettuce is considered to be the sweetest of all lettuces. To keep your leaves fresher for longer – rinse, pat dry with a towel and place them in a sealable bag or container that has a few holes in it to aid with airflow.

Camembert Vegan Nut Cheese

~ PLANT BASED BOX ~

Fauxmage provides dairy-free, cashew-based cheeses made from 100% natural ingredients. Their products are packaged in eco-friendly recycled paper, so you can enjoy any Fauxmage product knowing you’re being kind to your body and the planet too. Fauxmage cheeses can be frozen – the rich, soft, creamy camembert in your box will taste just as delicious when kept in the freezer. Store your cheese in the fridge – it has a shelf life of 4 weeks and 4 months if frozen.

Lentils

~ PLANT BASED & VEG BOXES ~

The organic brown lentils in your Market Box are sourced from Real Food Factory – a local company with 100% vegetarian-friendly factories. Brown lentils are a great source of protein – the ones in your box are locally grown, flavoursome, and, when dried, keep for up to a year. When cooking your lentils, make sure you empty them into a colander, rinse, and pick through them for any small stones or “dead” seeds that might have gotten into the mix. Soaking them also helps quicken their cooking time and reduces their antinutrient content.

Tofu

~ PLANT BASED & VEG BOXES ~

We have 100% organic tofu from Tofu Tub in your box this week. Tofu is extremely rich in protein, and is made from the curds of soybean milk – also known as “The Cheese of the Orient”. Your tofu comes in vacuum-sealed packaging, so if you’re not going to use it as soon as it arrives, we recommend that you store it in the fridge and consume within 3-5 days of opening. After you’ve opened the tofu, you can transfer any leftovers to an airtight container and fill it with fresh water.

Classic Vegetable Stock

~ PLANT BASED & VEG BOXES ~

Downtown Ramen is not only a popular spot for all your traditional Japanese broth-and-noodle dishes, but is also the supplier of the classic vegetable stock in your Market Box this week! Store your stock in the refrigerator for up to a week in a sealed container, or in the freezer for 2 months. A great freezing hack is to fill up an ice cube tray with some stock, and then pop out a few cubes for cooking.

Milk

~ VEG BOXES, MEDIUM & LARGE BOXES ~

The Langvallei Milk in your Market Box comes from grass-fed Jersey Cows that roam freely upon the hills of Robertson in the Dassieshoek Nature Reserve. Milk from Jersey Cows is unique as it contains 18% more protein, 20% more calcium and 25% more butterfat than 'average' milk – hence its rich, creamy colour. Your milk is not pasteurised, which means the cream will separate from the milk, so be sure to give it a good shake to keep the cream from separating – this extends the milk’s shelf life too!

Brie

~ VEG BOXES, MEDIUM & LARGE BOXES ~

The delicious cheese in your box this week is from Dalewood Fromage – an artisanal farmstead cheesery situated in the Cape Winelands. Dalewood only uses milk produced by its own Jersey cows – it’s an authentic estate cheese and has provenance. For optimum storage, leave it in the foil wrap it comes in. Place your wrapped cheese in an airtight container, to make sure it gets the right amount of moisture – this stops strong cheeses from emitting any odours and flavouring other contents in the fridge.

Young cheddar

~ VEG BOXES, MEDIUM & LARGE BOXES ~

In your box is some mild, soft, young cheddar cheese from Mystill for your enjoyment! Mystill’s artisanal, handmade cheeses are churned from the milk of dairy cows who graze on lucerne and grass pastures, and are milked only once a day – so there’s no pressure for high production. The cows also drink water from the springs on the farm so there is no chlorine in their water.

Duck Breast

~ LARGE AND MEDIUM BOX ~

The free range Caldhame duck breasts in your box are best stored in your freezer. Duck maintains good texture, even when frozen. Once you have thawed raw duck, do not refreeze it, unless you have cooked it. Defrosted duck should be used within 3-4 days.

Swordfish

~ LARGE AND MEDIUM BOX ~

The catch in your box this week is Greenfish’s swordfish! Greenfish is all about sustainable fishing – this small, family-run fishery draws on its knowledge of fishing, weather patterns, and fish availability to ensure their fishing methods are sustainable and environmentally friendly. Plus, all fish they catch are green-listed on the SASSI list.

Beef Bourguignon Sausage

~ LARGE AND MEDIUM BOX ~

To celebrate your Market Box’s French-themed ingredients this week, Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants have taken one of the most iconic recipes from this celebrated culinary country and made it into a sausage! Beef bourguignon has very specific ingredients, that’s what makes it a classic. In the mix are mushrooms, pearl onions, thyme, garlic, parsley, red wine, certified grass-fed beef – all piped into a sausage. Enjoy them baked or pan-fried.
