Know Your Food 2/10/2020

Where it’s from, a bit about it, perhaps a fun fact and how to store or keep fresh.

Fennel

~ ALL BOXES ~

We’re excited to have a fennel bulb in the box this week from Umthunzi. Fennel is a flowering plant species from the carrot family. While the bulb is most commonly eaten, the leaves, seed and even the pollen are coveted flavours for dishes around the world – you can even use the leaves in a tea for nausea. When storing your fennel bulb, separate the stalks from the bulb and store the two parts separately in the fridge. The bulb can be stored upright in a cup of water, and the leaves in an airtight container.  Use the fronds to flavour up another dish – use the whole veg slow-roasted and served as a beautiful side or on top of toasted pitas.

Tomatoes

ALL BOXES ~

Hello tamaties! Tomatoes are a great source of Vitamin A – great for cell growth and development, fighting off diseases and even good vision.

Baby Gem

~ ALL BOXES ~

The baby gem lettuce in your box comes from Valota. This compact, crispy lettuce is considered to be the sweetest of all lettuces. To keep your leaves fresher for longer – rinse, pat dry with a towel and place them in a sealable bag or container that has a few holes in it to aid with airflow.

Pears

~ ALL BOXES ~

In your boxes this week we have delicious and juicy forelle pears from Terra Madre – a farm based in the beautiful Elgin Valley. Terra Madre is a family-owned business that grows and sources sustainable fruits and vegetables. Remember there’s no need to peel your pears – their tender skin is edible and a great source of fibre.

Mango

~ MEDIUM, LARGE & PLANT BASED BOXS ~

We’ve got a tropical fruit in your box! Rich in vitamin A – half of a mango contains 40% of your recommended daily intake. Vitamin A is important for cell growth and development, for fighting off diseases and for good vision. Enjoy!

Avocados

~ ALL BOXES ~

Store your Avolands avocados at room temperature out of direct sunlight. Once ripe, eat right away or store in the fridge. If you’re looking to store half an avo, brush the exposed flesh with lemon juice, cover tightly with a Beeswax wrap, and refrigerate.

Green Olive Tapenade

~ ALL BOXES ~

Find Karen Dudley’s Green Olive Tapenade in your boxes this week. This olive paste is a treat when added to pastas, and can also be enjoyed as a spread on breads, crackers and as a dip for your veggies. Get those cheese boards ready!

Bundle of Sauces

~ ALL BOXES~

Greenhouse Farm Produce’s locally-made sauces tick all the boxes! They’re gluten-free, preservative-free, vegan, halaal and made from organic peppers. Find their hot sauce, chutney, and sweet pepper sauce in your box!

Granola

~ ALL BOXES  ~

The Seed & Circus granola in your box is made without the use of additives, is 100% gluten-free, and sweetened naturally with honey (the Plant Based box does not contain honey). The honey is sourced straight from the beekeeper, their olive oil is organic, and they make use of mineral rich Oryx desert salt.

Sourdough

~ MEDIUM, LARGE & PLANT BASED BOXS ~

Woodstock Bakery uses the best available, local ingredients, which are handled as little as possible from scaling to firing. Their breads are slow fermented to provide optimum taste and nutrition and all breads are baked in wood-fired ovens. Sourdough is made using a culture derived from fermenting flour and water over a period of 8-13 days.

Brie

~ SMALL, MEDIUM & LARGE BOXES ~

The delicious cheese in your box this week is from Dalewood Fromage – an artisanal farmstead cheesery situated in the Cape Winelands. Dalewood only uses milk produced by its own Jersey cows – it’s an authentic estate cheese and has provenance. For optimum storage, leave it in the foil wrap it comes in. Place your wrapped cheese in an airtight container, to make sure it gets the right amount of moisture – this stops strong cheeses from emitting any odours and flavouring other contents in the fridge.

Vegan Cheddar

~ PLANT BASED BOXS ~

LeCoquin is French for a sneaky little child, but as this sustainable supplier explains, their cheeses are free from dairy, egg, gluten, and soy – so there’s no need to sneak around when adding this firm-but-slightly-elastic cheese to your meals.Your vegan cheddar is the perfect pick for adding a creamy melty yummy texture to your sandwiches, crackers, over mac and cheese or any dish needing cheddar joy really.

Cape Bream Fish

~ SMALL, MEDIUM & LARGE WHITE & MIXED MEAT BOXES ~

Find a whole Cape bream in some of this week’s boxes from Abalobi. Abalobi is an organisation that seeks to empower small-scale fishing operations through the use of technology that ensures consumers are able to trace the origins of their sustainably caught, seasonal fish. Bake or braai your beam whole in delicious lemon garlic butter, use your fish bones to make nourishing fish stock, or make fish cakes with your “leftovers” – it’s the gift that keeps on giving! Keep an eye out for our weekly recipes on our Recipe Inspiration blog page and we’ll show you how.

 Beef Sausage

~ SMALL, MEDIUM & LARGE RED  & MIXED MEAT BOXES ~

We have some mouthwatering sausages for you from Frankie Fenner in some of this week’s boxes – all of their beef is grass-fed, which means no artificial feed, grain or growth hormones – just grass. The result? Top-quality, richly flavoured beef. The beef itself is dry-aged under strict conditions which improves flavour. Store your sausage in the fridge, when you are ready to munch on them, let them reach room temperature before cooking.

Lamb on the bone

~ SMALL RED MEAT, MEDIUM & LARGE  RED & MIXED MEAT BOXES ~

Herdsmen’s lamb is a combination of neck, shank, leg and shoulder on the bone. This lamb cut is best browned in a pot until golden and sealed, then cooked low-and-slow in a sauce for ultimate tenderness and flavour development, for a minimum of 2 hours.

Tuna

~ MEDIUM & LARGE WHITE MEAT BOXS ~

The catch in your box is Greenfish’s tuna. This tuna has been locally and sustainably caught using the pole method: one hook, one line, one fish at a time. Store your fresh tuna in your fridge and use at your leisure – it can last up to 5 days. Should you wish to freeze your tuna, freeze it as soon as you receive it and use it within 3 months.

Falafel

~ VEGETARIAN & PLANT BASED BOXES ~

Find Yoffi Falafel in your box this week. Although they’re healthy, they’re also incredibly moreish. Prepare them at home by frying them, and then gobble them up fresh out the pan.

Tofu

~  VEGETARIAN & PLANT BASED BOXES ~

The 100% organic tofu from Tofu Tub in your box is extremely rich in protein, and is made from the curds of soybean milk – also known as “The Cheese of the Orient”. Your tofu comes in vacuum-sealed packaging, so if you’re not going to use it as soon as it arrives, we recommend that you store it in the fridge and consume within 3-5 days of opening.

Brakslaai

~ VEGETARIAN, LARGE & PLANT BASED BOXES ~

Dubbed the "salty ice plant for salads" – the succulent green leaves in your Market Box come from local indigenous wild plant – the brakslaai. This succulent can be found growing in 3 provinces namely; the Eastern, Western and Northern Cape – on cliffs, sand dunes, and along coastal areas.
