Where it’s from, a bit about it, perhaps a fun fact and how to store or keep fresh

Sea Pumpkin & Sout Slaai

~ ALL BOXES ~

This duo both make great sides to this week’s Durban Curry-inspired dishes. These indigenous succulents are natural to the Cape’s winter rainfall and are cultivated by the Cape Flat’s small-scale farmers. Sweet Potatoes

ALL BOXES ~

Keep these lovelies unpeeled – when eaten with their skin on, sweet potatoes are a great source of fibre and Vitamin A, easy to prepare and incredibly versatile – bake, steam, boil, mash, fry, or juice them! 

Swiss Chard 

~ MEDIUM, LARGE, VEGETARIAN & PlANT BASE BOXES ~

Sourced from Naturally Organics, the swiss chard in your box can be braised and enjoyed in a curried stew. The stems are firmer than the leaves, so when cooking start by chopping up and cooking the stems before the leaves. Chards keep for up to four days in the fridge.

Coriander

~  ALL BOXES ~

Naturally Organic’s coriander, also known as dhania, is a flavoursome herb – set to give those curries a burst of flavour and aroma. Use them as a garnishing on hot dishes just before serving to keep their flavour.

Blueberries

~  ALL BOXES ~

We've got delicious Terra Madre blueberries in your box! If you're using your berries in baked goods, dust them with flour just before you add them to a batter. This ensures they do not sink to the bottom of the pan. Store in a dry place or freeze them. 


Avocados

~  ALL BOXES ~

Store your avocados at room temperature out of direct sunlight. Once ripe, eat right away or place in the fridge. If you’re looking to store half an avo, brush the exposed flesh with lemon juice, cover tightly with a Beeswax wrap, and refrigerate.

Paneer

~ MEDIUM, LARGE & VEGETARIAN ~

This week’s paneer is sourced from Cream of the Crop. Widely used in north Indian cuisine, paneer can be eaten fresh as is, or added to dishes for a milky texture. Paneer blends beautifully in curry. 


Vegan Camembert

~ PLANT BASED ~

Fauxmage provides dairy-free, cashew-based cheeses made from 100% natural ingredients. Fauxmage cheeses can be frozen or stored in the fridge – it has a shelf life of 4 weeks and 4 months if frozen.

Rotis

~ ALL BOXES ~

Find hand made rotis from Prashad in your box! Perfect for curry night. Pan-fry them for 2-3 minutes per side, until golden and warmed through. Serve alongside a variety of different gravy or stewed dishes that can be scooped up with this fresh flat bread.

Soaked Oats Bread  

~ SMALL, LARGE, VEGETARIAN and PLANT BASED ~ 

In your box this week, find SCHOON’s home-baked soaked oats bread. The ingredients are all locally and sustainably sourced, and natural. At the heart of SCHOON is a desire to make naturally fermented, stoneground, hearth baked breads a staple in every South African home. 


Granola 

~  MEDIUM, LARGE, VEGETARIAN & PLANT BASED ~ 

The Seed & Circus granola in your box is made without the use of additives, is 100% gluten-free, and sweetened naturally with honey (the Plant Based box does not contain honey). The honey is sourced straight from the beekeeper, their olive oil is organic, and they make use of mineral rich Oryx desert salt.


Lamb

~ SMALL, MEDIUM & LARGE BOXES ~ 

Herdsmen’s lamb is a combination of neck, shank, leg and shoulder on the bone. This lamb cut is best browned in a pot until golden and sealed, then cooked low-and-slow in a sauce for ultimate tenderness and flavour development, for a minimum of 2 hours.


Whole Chicken

~ SMALL, MEDIUM & LARGE BOXES ~ 

The chicken in your box this week comes from Son of a Butcher (SOB), whose produce is pasture-reared and free of hormones. Once removed from its packaging, discard any residue liquids – then rinse your chicken and set it aside to air for 20 minutes. This process helps remove the cold edge, bringing it closer to room temperature and ensuring a smoother cooking process.

Hake

~ MEDIUM & LARGE BOXES~

Your hake comes from Greenfish and will come defrosted so it’s not a good idea to freeze again – rather use it within two days of receiving your box. When you’re ready to cook, rinse it under the tap and pat dry with a tea towel before frying. 

Organic Chickpeas   

~ VEG & PLANT BASED BOXES ~

Chickpeas are high in fibre and protein and are a good source of iron, phosphorus, and folic acid. Mash to a paste with lemon juice, olive oil, and sesame paste for a delicious dip or bread spread. 

Organic Red Lentils  

~ VEG & PLANT BASE BOXES~

Rich in proteins, minerals and fibre, prepare your Real Food Factory lentils by rinsing them under cold water until the water runs clear. Put lentils in a pot with enough water to cover; bring to a boil, place a cover on the pot, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer until tender, up to 20 minutes.

Rogan Josh Curry Paste 

~ ALL BOXES ~

Enjoy Taste the Paste’s rogan josh curry paste made from garlic, ginger, olive oil, coriander, peppercorns, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, paprika, smoked paprika, turmeric, garam masala, oven roasted red peppers, Himalayan salt, fresh cayenne chilli, tomato puree, turmeric. The paste can be refrigerated for 10 days and can be frozen too. 


Mixed Fruit Atchar 

~ LARGE, MEDIUM, VEGETARIAN & PLANT BASED ~

We are delighted to have some of Nuru Pickles’ atchar in your box. Nuru’s family comes from India and it was her aunt who taught her how to make atchar and pickles. In India, it is spelled achar, which means ‘pickle’ in Hindi. This is a fresh mixed veg atchar and must be stored in the fridge.

~ VEGETARIAN & PLANT BASED ~
