Where it’s from, a bit about it, perhaps a fun fact and how to store or keep fresh

Kale

~ LARGE, MED, VEG & PLANT BOX~

Naturally Organic has added kale to your bountiful Spring Harvest! Kale’s reputation for being a tough green (as no amount of boiling will make their woody stems soft or edible) is well known, but it is possible to turn your kale leaves into something deliciously more-ish, and chef Amerae @ameraev will show us how. 

Edible flowers

~ LARGE, MED, VEG & PLANT BOX~

What would a Spring Harvest be without a burst of colour! The beautiful brightly coloured edible flowers in your box come from the Durbanville Hills of Olief farm. Add a pop of colour and texture to your salads, cakes and/or beverages.

Strawberries

~ ALL BOXES~

We’ve got Mysthill Farm’s first seasonal spring harvest of strawberries in your Market Box – can we all raise our strawberry filled glasses at this good news? Your juicy, sweet strawberries were picked from fields against the Outeniqua Mountains in George. Store (unwashed) in the refrigerator for 3-5 days, they can also be frozen and keep for up to 2 months. 

Mange Tout Peas

~ ALL BOXES~

Field Fresh’s bright green mange tout peas are perfect for a Spring Harvest salad. In addition to being packed with magnesium, potassium and calcium – green peas also provide a fair amount of phytonutrients which are known to promote vision and eye health.

Gem Squash

~ ALL BOXES~

Welcome the gem squash! The gem squash is low in calories and contains useful amounts of vitamin A and C, as well as iron, folate, potassium and niacin. Best enjoyed baked or roasted.

Rainbow carrots

~ ALL BOXES~

Keep your carrots crisp and crunchy for longer by snipping off their leafy tails, wash the body, then store them (preferably) in the veg crisper drawer of your fridge. 

Tofu

~ PLANT BASED & VEG BOXES ~

We have some 100% organic tofu in your box this week. Tofu is extremely rich in protein, and is made from the curds of soybean milk – also known as “The Cheese of the Orient”. Your tofu comes in vacuum sealed packaging – store in the fridge and consume within 3-5 days of opening. After you have opened the tofu, you can also transfer any tofu that remains to an airtight container and fill it with fresh water. 

Chickpeas

~ PLANT BASED & VEG BOXES ~

Chickpeas are high in protein and make an excellent replacement for meat in vegetarian and vegan diets. Your locally grown, organic chickpeas come from Real Food Factory – a local company with their ethics always at the core of their business. Soak them overnight before cooking to lower cooking time. 

Camembert Vegan Nut Cheese

~ PLANT BASED BOXES ~

Fauxmage provides dairy-free, cashew-based cheeses made from 100% natural ingredients. Their products are packaged in eco-friendly recycled paper so you can enjoy any Fauxmage product knowing you’re being kind to your body and the planet too. Store your cheese in the fridge – it has a shelf life of 4 weeks and 4 months when frozen.

Dorado

~ SMALL, MEDIUM & LARGE BOXES ~ 

The fresh catch in your box is Greenfish’s dorado. Dorados are found all along the coast of southern Africa and are caught using Greenfish’s sustainable pole method – one hook, one line, one fish at a time. It has a mild and sweet taste and the texture is moderately firm, making it a very popular fish to eat.

Whole Chicken

~ MEDIUM & LARGE BOXES ~ 

The chicken in your box this week comes from food producer – Son of a Butcher (SOB). SOB produce is pasture-reared and free of hormones. Once removed from its packaging, discard any residue liquids – then, rinse your chicken and set it aside to air for 20 minutes. This process helps remove the cold edge, bringing it closer to room temperature – ensuring a smoother cooking process and tastier results. 

Beef Mince  

~ SMALL, MEDIUM & LARGE BOXES ~ 

Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants (FFMM) have supplied this week’s pasture-reared beef mince. Their mince has about 20% fat and 80% meat and is delivered to you, fresh! It’s best to dig in as soon as possible – alternatively freeze your beef if you’re not going to cook it within 2 days of receiving your box. 

Milk

~ VEG BOXES, SMALL, MEDIUM & LARGE BOXES~ 

The Langvallei milk in your Market Box comes from grass-fed Jersey Cows. Although your milk is pastuerised, it is not homogenised – which means the cream will separate from the milk, so be sure to give it a good shake to keep the cream from separating (this extends the milk’s shelf life too).


Feta

~VEG, LARGE AND MEDIUM BOXES ~

The creamy feta cheese in your box is from Camelot. Properly stored in brine or milk and refrigerated, feta cheese will last up to 3 months – feta is not ideal for freezing.

Epi Bread

~ ALL BOXES ~

Knead Bakery’s epi bread is a plant-based bread and perfect for your Spring Harvest, notice that it is shaped like branches of a tree. It’s soft, delicious and made from beautiful sourdough ferment. Break off a branch, butter it up and fly away with the bread gods.

Green Chilli

~ PLANT BASED, VEG, LARGE AND MEDIUM BOXES  ~

This bright jar of green chili by Aioli is packed with flavour, and made using locally grown green chilli, garlic, ginger, salt, olive oil, vinegar and sugar. This is a condiment for life. 

Truffle Aioli 

~ ALL BOXES ~

You’ll find the crème de la crème of the Aioli range; their Truffle Aioli in your box! This luxurious product is made with chopped black French truffle, and makes the perfect dip to crispy pomme frites, or dollop on a baked potato or X-factor to your burger.
